The permit path

Four steps.
One clear direction.

Everything a Wisconsin family needs to know before enrolling in Trident’s online classroom course.

01

Enroll with a parent

Students can enroll once they are 14 years and 6 months old. After registration, both student and parent receive an Enrollment Agreement to sign. Then the online course opens.

02

Complete the 30-hour online class

Work at your pace, up to two hours a day. You can start the same day, sign out whenever needed, and return exactly where you stopped. The course must be completed within 180 days.

03

Receive your completion certificate

When your course is complete, Trident enters the Classroom Completion Certificate in your DMV record. Watch for the email from noreply@dot.wi.gov, including your Junk folder.

04

Prepare for your permit and driving lessons

Take your completion certificate to a local driving school for the paperwork needed to take the permit test. You can receive a permit at 15, and a license at 16 after holding the permit for at least six months.

Planning to use the Wisconsin Driver Education Grant?

Eligible 14.5 to 18-year-olds can apply through WisDOT before enrolling. When funding is available, the grant can cover classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel lessons, and observation hours for qualifying families.
